When Santa Clause makes his rounds and comes to your town during the holiday season, that’s the enthusiasm I felt when I heard Al Haymon’s, Premier Boxing Champions, conglomerate was stopping by my town in sunny Arizona while bringing powerhouse ESPN primetime telecast with him. The card may not be super star studded but it’s still professional boxing regardless and I’m hype to cover it.
Sure, I would have loved to see AZ prize fighters get some TV exposure and showcase their talent to the masses but what we have is the privilege of a card with current and former world champions such as Devon Alexander “The Great” vs. Aron Martinez, in a welterweight twelve round tussle. Alexander (26-3, 14KO) might be the most known of all the boxers on this PBC on ESPN card. He’s a proven two division champion from St. Louis, Missouri and trains under the guidance of Kevin Cunningham. Martinez rather, is known as the guy who was seconds away from knocking out Robert Guerrero in a potentially huge upset earlier this year. Unfortunately, the proud Mexican, fell short of a split decision in a fight of the year type of fight in the West Coast mecca, also known as the StubHub Center outside of Los Angeles where Martinez (19-4-1, 4KO) calls home.
The featherweight IBF title will be defended in the Co-Main bout featuring Englishman Lee Selby versus Fernando Montiel, from Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico. Selby (21-1, 8KO) is riding a 16 fight winning streak while making his first defense and his American debut to further popularize his status. His fighting style is very fan friendly and likes to mix it up as most of these smaller divisions often do. Montiel (54-4, 39 KO) is more decorated and experienced overall so this matchup is a classic crossroads attraction for the former bantamweight champion.
Also scheduled for action on the undercard is Ivan Redkach (18-1, 14KO) vs. Erick Martinez (11-2, 5KO), 10 rounds, in the lightweight division. Flyweights Damien Vasquez vs. Francisco Lapizco; junior featherweights Tugstsogt Nyambayar vs. Ricardo Proana and Valley of the Sun resident and hometown representative Alexis “Beaver” Santiago vs. Gustavo Molina in a 8 round junior featherweights scrap. Lionell Thompson vs. Thomas Hanshaw, 8 round cruiserweights bout will also consummate from The Gila River Arena in the WestGate Entertainment District of Glendale, Arizona. Santiago recently signed a promotional pact with Mayweather Promotions and trains out of the Mayweather Gym at times. For more info on Beaver Santiago go here http://ronatringside.com/?p=733
